Legislation

Croatian legislation

In 2003, two key pieces of legislation were enacted regulating this area during a longstanding legal vacuum in the GMO area, a de facto moratorium was applied in the absence of any legal grounds. They are the Nature Protection Act (Official Gazette No. 162/2003) and the Food Act (Official Gazette No. 117/2003).

Bilateral, regional and multilateral agreements

These are the international treaties concluded by the Republic of Croatia that are relevant for establishment of NBF.

EU legislation

EU legislation on GMOs has been in place since the early 1990s. This specific legislation has two main objectives:

  • to protect health and the environment,
  • to ensure the free movement of safe and healthy genetically modified products in the European Union.

The entire corpus of GMO legislation has recently been amended, leading to the creation of a new legal framework.
